I had never heard of Wemos until recently.
What are it’s benefits over Wemos from the Arduino family?

Well, the main points are these:
  1. It has WiFI!
  2. Larger memory = More features!
  3. Faster processor - it can clock at 160MHz = more features!
  4. It has an on board programming interface - no special tools needed
  5. OTA Updates!

As with anything in engineering, there are compromises:
  1. Although the processor is fast, it is not fast enough to handle WiFi and multiplexing without hiccups
  2. The code is larger

For me, the trade off is well worth it, and all new designs are on the basis of Wemos/ESP. Long live Espressif!

Although Lolin has discontinued them, Wemos D1 mini Pro clones are readily available on aliexpress. 16 MB (yes, MegaBytes) of flash, giving lots of SPIFFS space. You could put all the documentation and source code there, so it could be downloaded directly from the clock. But they do cost US$1 more than the 4 MB ones.

Wit all that space, we could also serve all the HTML/CSS and so on directly from the clock, and also make a nice list of town -> DST configurations.

How's your AJAX? You could have a "virtual NIXIE clock" web page.
