I see you edited your post after it was emailed to me. Since I already looked up the data sheets before seeing your edit, here is the info in case anyone else is interested.

2N7000 = 1-2-3 > S-G-D
BS170 = 1-2-3 > D-G-S

I can still send you some replacements if you prefer. The 2N7000 is not a great part, but it's good enough for this task. I have had this (always on the blue) a couple of times in the hundreds I have built. A substitution solves it.

Hi Alex,
these FETs don't have gate protection, so it's quite easy to kill them by improper handling (static electricity).

I would say that the 2N7000 and the BS170 are quite comparable given that in the data sheets the conditions given for the leakage currents are different. It's just the reversed pinout of the BS170 you have to keep in mind.
