On this same topic, a nice flip clock made it onto Hackaday today.

It's eight digits and is using fancy (and rare) alphanumeric flap displays from a train station. Even the colon separators are implemented in flaps.

It's hilarious how in-demand split flap displays are now. When I was a kid they were the most hideous, common, primitive large display. We grew up with GE split flap alarm clocks, and I remember lamenting how lame they were compared to the big green LED alarm clocks. Nothing but motors and gears...no solid state, no lighting up, bah! Now everybody from Nixie guys to classic gameshow nostalgia collectors (yes, they actually exist and even have blogs) want a split flap display.
Flip dot matrix displays are a more compelling design. They're akin to direct-view core memory, which means they're the only way that most people can play with functional core memory at all.

We have a few of these smaller Ferranti-Packard 5x7 matrices...
The buses in Dayton use the larger ones, and they usually have some number of dead/inactive dots.
