Here is a great design from Windell Oskay from Evil Made Scientist. It is based on a modified HP 5321B frequency counter. One of the key challenges is converting the decade counting logic to have it roll over from 59 -> 0 and 12 -> 1. They designed the modifications to fit nicely in the original casing. It is a great modification, a nice writeup and it is worth checking out.
