There is a method in the madness...

The IN-18 footprint uses the Harwin type pin receptacles, so the tube is very close to the board.

People also have real problems hand soldering the WS2812Bs - they get fried easily and it's frustrating for people.

It's just an idea at the moment... If I'm crazy, tell me... ;)

Oh, wait.... you just did... ;)

With the Harwin pins I solve that I solder them in the board with a distance.

Yes I agree with you that soldering from the LED WS2812B is not easy but can be solved.
The question is for whom should we provide the kits?
A certain basic knowledge of soldering should be available.
In the last Nixie workshop with 6 people I had to re-solder 11 WS2812B because the previous knowledge for this wokshop was not fulfilled.
SMD components are also part of the IN-14 Modular, which is a major challenge for some watchmakers.
I also worked with the WS2812B 3535 used with a 0.2mm soldering tip and 0.3mm solder wire and with a 10x magnifier this works very well.

I am currently thinking of constructing an SMD variant. All large components on the bottom to have a tidy top with SMD 1206.
Let's see how far I get ;)

I assume they are still addressable LEDs? Something like the APA106?

Have you considered using the recessed footprint, like on your numitron boards?

Yes, I've only ever used the WS2812B 3535 because it is not so easy with the milling of the PCB. The IN-14 Modular has deeply inserted the WS2812B 5050 in the tube holder that works well.
