Rev 3: Hot MOSFET & low Voltage

Trying to troubleshoot my board. I've completed up to page 19 of the manuel and my MOSFET is very hot and I'm not getting a voltage readout any higher than 2.5 on any point on the board. Only the Red LED (LED1) is lighting up. Any tips on moving forward would be appreciated.

Can you send a picture of the top of the board?

What power supply are you using?

Did the low voltage circuit build test out correctly?

Those links are useless. When trying to look at your pictures, Google wants a login. When I log in with a Google account I still do not have permission to view. If they're just JPEGs or PNGs, upload them to this site as attachments.

Look into it later when the dust is clearing off the crater.

Of course, so sorry--posted these a little later in the evening after a long day.

Hope these are more useful.

That's better - thank you.

Let's get the simplest thing out of the way first. We need to make sure the 12v power supply is actually working right. Try measuring its voltage disconnected from the clock (by probing the plug) and then with it connected to the clock (by probing the VIN and GND pins of header SV1 located next to the power input connector).

If the power supply is working okay then you need to re-check the Low Voltage circuit thoroughly. In the pictures it looks like you have IC1, L2 and the capacitors installed correctly. I can't really see the rest of the parts. Diode D3 is of particular interest - is it in the correct orientation, and is it the right diode (not mixed up with D1 or D3)?

The hot MOSFET and no high voltage are probably just side effects. As long as VCC is less than 5 volts nothing is going to work right.

Look into it later when the dust is clearing off the crater.
