4 Digits on 6 Digit board?

Actually, that is the board the 4 digit firmware is intended to be used with. If you had the 5-pin Front header (signifying the board was Rev. 6) the 4 digit firmware would not work.

IOW go ahead and flash the 4 digit firmware - it will be fine.

Look into it later when the dust is clearing off the crater.

You can, but you won't easily be able to use the 2 free GPIO pins that will be left over. If that's good for you, then it's fine.

Seems like accessing those spare GPIOs is just a matter of removing R12 and R13, then soldering wires into the resulting empty holes - on the side toward the micro, not toward the optos of course. Or am I overlooking something?

Look into it later when the dust is clearing off the crater.
