Quick spam update -
I setup a new account filter a few weeks ago and that has blocked lots of spam accounts. It looks like the last few spam posts were actually from accounts registered before I installed the filter. I found a pretty convincing pattern and proactively banned those accounts that matched the pattern.
What system are you using to get the data from the computer to the display? Do they actually sell scriptable USB-enabled LED marquee displays now? The last time I had to use one, they only came in red and you had to type in messages using a membrane keyboard that was as comfortable and user friendly as a vicious zombie attack.
Now if only there were some sort of script you could run that would use the scrolling LED display as a club to bludgeon the spammers into unconsciousness...
I'm using a product called Kitchi - it sits as a Windows service and updates the display. It pulls down the RSS feed from this forum and uses it to populate the display. It can also read flat files and other data sources. Every few minutes, I have it reload the feed, blank the display for ~5 seconds and load a new message.
That's pretty awesome. It must be working because I've been deleting much fewer spams the past few days. Hey wait a minute, I've been replaced by a machine! Well don't come complaining to me when your LED marquee becomes self-aware and decides that you'd be a suitable chemical fuel cell to power its war machine.
I had a thought, is there any way you can write a script to automatically block posts which begin with a particular text string? Every single spam I've deleted on here began with the word 'empty', all lower case. How many real posts are going to begin with that?
While I'm on the subject, here's the latest list of violent offenders...
